CONNEMARA DAY TOUR

Connemara Day Trip Overview

Come with us on this excursion to Ireland's west coast and back all in a day. For the duration of the trip, our guide will educate you on the flora and fauna, history and the geology of the area. The views are out of this world and we believe this tour is a must for any visitor to Ireland.

We leave Dublin early at 6.30am to give ourselves as much time as possible in the beautiful Connemara National Park. We aim to be back in Dublin around 7.00pm after a full and eventful day.

You will experience the magnificent views of Connemara provided by the dramatic landscape of the Twelve Bens and Maumturk mountain ranges on one side and the wild Atlantic Ocean on the other. You will see areas of outstanding beauty and historical relevance. From feedback received from our guests, we guarantee that the sights and experiences from this trip will remain with you for a long time!

The Killary harbour boat trip doesn't operate during the winter so as a substitute we provide a trip to a working sheep farm where you will be given a sheepdog exhibition and shown other tricks of the trade.

Connemara Day Trip Itinerary

6:30am : Depart Dublin

We meet at the Molly Malone Statue on Suffolk street (sitemap is available within the link to the booking page). We then set off on our adventure to the wild west coast of Ireland! We take the scenic route to Oughterard, considered the gateway to Connemara. You are now in an Irish (Gaeltacht) area. We will pass through many quaint towns and enjoy gorgeous scenery before we enter the national park. It has no boundary lines but is marked by its truly outstanding beauty and panoramic, unspoiled views. This truly unique part of Ireland is filled with specatacular views that give the impression of a flawless painting.

10:30am : Killary Fjord Cruise / Sheep Farm

We visit the only Fjord in Ireland, Killary Fjord. Enjoy the views across the water of Mweelrea, the highest mountain range on the west coast and marvel at the mussel beds in the harbour. During the high season (April - October) this tour includes a one and a half hour boat cruise around Killary harbour. Your lunch stop will be on the boat during these months.  During the winter season (November - March) the boat cruise does not run but we will visit the Killary Sheep Farm, a traditional farm with approximately 200 ewes and lambs that roam freely around the fjord. You will be given a skilled sheepdog demonstration and learn about how the people and livestock cope with the barren land and the harsh weather.

We will then pass through the village of Leenane where the iconic film "The Field" was shot - a must see for any film buff. The story of Bull McCabe captures the Irish mindset of the value of land above all things. From here, we will continue in a circular route towards Galway taking in views of the Sheefry Hills.

12:15pm : Kylemore Abbey

Next stop is Kylemore Abbey, where we will stop for some photos and lunch (entry to the abbey is not included). Once a prestigious girls boarding school, it now homes nuns on retreat and welcomes tourists from around the world. The abbey is situated at the base of the Druchruach mountains with views out to the northern shore of Lough Pollacapall. Enjoy the views, history and the pure beauty of this place. The impressive and sprawling abbey nestled against the mountain with lake views is a scene that leaves many visitors mesmerised.

2:00pm : Inagh Valley

We will travel through the fabulous Inagh Valley, which was featured in the mobile phone advertisement known as "Can you hear me now?" It's a line every Irish person says when reception is poor and is also not limited just to the Irish! This is a drive with breathtaking landscape, one of the most scenic in Ireland. Every bend in the road leads to more dazzling views. If you can't get a good photograph here, you can't get one anywhere!

3:15pm : Galway City

Back in Galway City, take at least an hour to explore the narrow streets and visit some craft shops or visit some of the many tourist attractions such as the Claddagh Ring Museum, Galway Cathedral and Galway Harbour with the magnificent Spanish Arch. Galway is a vibrant city - there is always activity in the streets, in the pubs and theatres. Galway was also the last port of call for Columbus before his infamous voyage to discover America. It's our last port today before driving back to Dublin.

7:00pm : Arrive Back in Dublin

We return to Dublin after a long, yet full day of seeing and experiencing Ireland's finest scenery.

“Connemara and Galway - Great Value For Money”

Trip Advisor - 5 stars -5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2015

Sunday 23rd August 2015 was a miserable wet day in Dublin. So it was nice to go on this great excursion for 12 hours to the far west of Ireland. Although time outside the bus was limited we had a long cruise on a fjord in a comfortable, sheltered boat and an hour in Galway. The guide, Phil, was very good. The vast majority oif his coach was not English speaking and some of the passengers are not good at timekeeping. He had to get on the boat for a 1230 sailing and some of the passengers almost missed the bus at the previous stop. I have enjoyed all my tours with Extreme Ireland.

“5 Stars for Larry and our trip to Connemara”

Trip Advisor - 5 Stars - Reviewed 30 May 2015

We very much enjoyed our day trip to the Connemara region and the Killary Fjord with Irish Day Tours. We booked the trip via an online platform and were to meet the guide in Dublin. When we arrived, the driver Larry was already at the meeting point. Although he didn't have us on his list (apparently due to an error with the booking platform) Larry checked our prepaid vouchers and took us on the medium sized bus. Together with 15 other guests, the tour started. Larry was really funny and kind and he had always something interesting to explain which made the long hours on the bus pass by very quickly. During the breaks, Larry talked to all of the passengers, took photos for us/of us and often stopped at beautiful places during the journey. The tour was well planned and beautiful! Thanks to Larry, a true Irish gentleman, the trip was very fun and informative.

“A great sampling to test the waters”

Trip Advisor - 5 Stars - Reviewed 12 April 2015

I had the pleasure of taking a delightful tour from Dublin to Connemarra a few days ago. It was our last day in the country and we wanted a way to get out of the city and get a quick sampling of another part of the country. Our driver Jim was genial and knowledgeable. He read the feel of his bus and gave some people plenty of time to sleep during the drive, and also gave great information when we were all awake. The locations were beautiful, the drive was delightful, and our driver was fantastic. Thanks, Jim, it was a great experience.

“Galway and Connemara”

Trip Advisor - 5 stars -5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2013

Great day travelling around. The driver was so nice, having a calm and clear english to be understood by everyone, had lots of wonderful stories to talk about Ireland history. Both Galway and Connemara are beautiful places to visit, together with the visit to Kylamore Abbey and the boat trip to the Fjord. I recommend this visit. Enjoy!

“Connemara Tour”
5 of 5 starsTrip Advisor - 5 stars - Reviewed 6 August 2013

I hadn't been to Galway in a good few years so decided to book the one day tour to Connemara. We departed Dublin at 650 am and after a brief stop for refreshments in Athlone we reached our first destination at Kylemore Abbey. That was really amazing and we had a good 45 minutes to explore the Abbey and the surrounding area. Then it was off to Killary Harbour for our boat trip. That was the highlight of the day for me and it's such a beautiful part of the country.Of course the weather helped as well. After that we drove through Leenane on our way to Galway City.We had 2 hours there of free time and to get some food.We were back in Dublin at around 8 pm I think. All in all an excellent day out and as an Irish person I can't recommend Extreme Ireland Tours highly enough.I actually booked another tour with them since and will review it as well. Our driver/guide Mac was extremely knowledgeable on the area and went beyond the call of duty to make sure that everyone had a wonderful day. He also weighed in with a song or two!
